2024 INTAKES – COURSE INFORMATION

1. THE SCHOOL

Thank you for your interest in studying at Lutheran School of Nursing.

Lutheran School of Nursing has merged under Lutheran University of Papua New Guinea (LUPNG). Lutheran University of Papua New Guinea (LUPNG) will confer the Diploma and Degree awards once you successfully completed your study.

The school is situated 5km away from the main town center and the airport and is across the road from Modilon General Hospital here in Madang. The school campus comprises of an office block, a double story block comprising 4 classrooms and a library, a recreation hall, a student computer lab, dormitories for male and female students, a mess and staff houses.

Lutheran School of Nursing is a Church run institution under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELC-PNG) and you will be expected to abide by the Christian Principles and follow the School Rules.  The school days begin with devotion at 7:30 am in the Recreation Hall. Community Service is done on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings and you are required to participate as well.

2. COURSES OFFERED

Two programs are currently offered here at the college.  The Diploma in General Nursing is offered for those who want to do a Diploma in Nursing and the Bachelor in Midwifery Nursing is one year and six months (18months) program and is offered for the general nurses who have been working in the field for more than two years and want to do a specialty in women and babies health.

The three (3) year competency based Diploma in General Nursing program consists of 50% theory and 50% practical training as well as the Bachelor in Midwifery Nursing program. During the first two years of training the year one and two students in the Diploma Program are sent to both the urban and rural health clinics.  In the third year, the students are sent to Rural Health Centers or Hospitals within the MOMASE and Highlands region.  The Midwifery students go out for Clinical practice in the Hospital as well as Rural Health Facilities for the rural experience.

Our academic year has two semesters Diploma Program and three trimesters for the Midwifery Program. The first semester begins in January and ends in June and the second semester begins in July and ends in November.

3. COURSE FEES

Course fee varies from every year due to unstable economy of our country. Every year fees are increasing because of the high rates of inflation that affects the prices of goods and services. Therefore, before filling in this application form please ensure that your parents or guardians/ sponsor must have enough. It is also important that you find a sponsor for the duration of your study.

1. Diploma of General Nursing – Fees are charged at K8, 500 to K11, 000.00

2. Bachelor of Midwifery – K18, 000 –K27, 000.00

Only when you are selected you will be informed on the set fee Approved by the School Board for that school year.               

4. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE DIPLOMA IN GENERAL NURSING PROGRAM

  1.  Non School Leaver (NSL) Applicants (self-sponsor) must have:
  1. Must be below 35 years of age
  2. Successfully completed grade twelve (12) or have up-graded to twelve (12) via Matriculation studies at DODL or University Centres or FODE in the provinces.
  3. Valid Gr 12 Certificate and Matriculation Certificate with “A and/or B” grades in English, Major Maths (Maths 1), Biology and Chemistry (highly recommended) or Physics.
  4. A suitable character and personality; with a satisfactory recommendation from their School Principal and the community leader.
  5. All documents must be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths or a Magistrate at the Court House
  1. Community Health Worker (CHW) Applicants (self-sponsor):
  2. Must be below 35 years of age
  3. 3-5 years of working experience
  4. Must have “C” grades in English, Mathematics and Science in year ten (10) or have up-graded.
  5. Must speak and write good English
  6. Commitment to work and should have very good character references from (immediate Supervisor, PHA or DNS for CHW Applicants).
  7. Recommendation from the Provincial Health Advisors or relevant Church Health Secretaries.
  1.  Bachelor of Midwifery

1. You must at least have six months or more of clinical experience in in Obstetrics and gynaecology

2.     Currently registered with the Nursing Council and holds a full license to practice as a nurse.

3.     Must be less than forty-five (45) years of age.

4.     Your last child must be two years and over by the time you come for study.

5.     You must have Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and can be able to use internet.

6.     Must be able to communicate well in English, both written and verbal 

5. SELECTION CRITERIA

Finally, there is a list of 10 important (Selection) Criteria toward the back-end of the Application Form that you are required to meet in order to be selected to do nursing at Lutheran School of Nursing (LSON). Please read them carefully. Competition is very high however, space is also very limited. Therefore, only those who meet the requirements are selected.
